The BWAA Names Thom Loverro As The 46th Fleischer Award Winner


Boxing Writers Association of America is honored to name Thom Loverro, the lead sports columnist for The Washington Times, as the 46th winner of the Nat Fleischer Award for excellence in boxing journalism. The voting of past winners determines the honoree.

Loverro is a long-time member of the BWAA and has won numerous writing awards for his boxing coverage, including in 2014 when he revealed, through the Freedom of Information Act, that the FBI believed the first Sonny Liston-Cassius Clay fight was fixed. He also received an award from the Associated Press Sports Editors association for this story.

He had been a sportswriter at The Washington Times since 1992 and has written extensively about boxing since then, both locally and nationally. In 2015, he was inducted into the Washington, D.C. Boxing Hall of Fame in recognition for contributions of local boxing coverage in the Washington area.

Loverro has covered numerous major championship fights, such as the Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield trilogy; the two Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield fights; Felix Trinidad's win over Oscar De La Hoya; Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao and many more. He has been featured on several HBO Legendary Nights programs and ESPN's Sports Classics about boxing.

In 2009, Loverro was named Maryland Sportswriter of the Year. In 2014, he earned D.C. Sportswriter of the Year award by the National Sports Media Association, as well as honored nationally for sport columns by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Loverro also does a weekly podcast called "Cigars & Curveballs," which has featured such boxing greats as George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Leonard and Gerry Cooney.

Loverro has written 11 books, including, Hail Victory: an Oral History of The Washington Redskins and The Encyclopedia of Negro League Baseball.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Loverro is a graduate of the University of Scranton, and received a master's degree in journalism and public affairs from American University. He has taught writing classes at Towson University and American University, and currently teaches a course in the Business of Sports Media in Georgetown University's Sport Industry Management graduate program.
