FUKUDA, BELLO TAKE TOP HONORS IN BWAA PHOTO CONTEST

Naoki Fukuda, shooting for RingTV.com, and Getty Images’ Al Bello took top honors in the Boxing Writers Association of America photo contest and will be recognized at the 90th annual BWAA Awards Dinner, to be held April 24 at Capitale in New York City, the night before the Wladimir Klitschko-Bryant Jennings heavyweight championship bout in Madison Square Garden.

Brooklyn Nets announcer David Diamante will serve as master of ceremonies for the event, which has been hailed as the “Academy Awards of boxing.”

Fukuda’s winning shot in the Action category was of welterweight Robert Guerrero rearranging Yoshihiro Kamegai’s facial features en route to posting a 12-round unanimous decision on June 21 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The Las Vegas-based Fukuda also scored an Honorable Mention in the Feature category.

As is the case with Fukuda, Bello has won numerous awards for his work from the BWAA. His first-place photo in the Feature category is of light heavyweight Marcus Browne making a splash, throwing punches in a swimming pool in old Bethpage, N.Y., in preparation for his first-round stoppage of Paul Vasquez on Aug. 9 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Also placing in the Action category are Chris Farina, of Top Rank, who took second, and third-place Peter Frutkoff, of Fightnews.com. Honorable mentions went to Edward Lea, of The Press of Atlantic City; Esther Lin, of Showtime, and Mikey Williams, of Top Rank.

Joining Bello in the Feature category are Ed Mulholland, of HBO Sports, who finished second, and Williams, third.

Steve Falk, staff photographer for the Philadelphia Inquirer, served as head of the judging committee.
